四、完型填空
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Love is
blind”? If so, you are already 51 with a type of
mistake in our attempts to understand others: halo(光环)
effects.
This type of mistake
52 to the fact that, once we form an overall impression of
somebody, it could have strong effects on our 53 of
his personality. 54 , halo effects are both common
and powerful. 55 , most organizations contain one or
more “superstars”---people who have earned the reputation for
being unusually 56 and capable. Once they have
gained such a “halo”, everything they do receives good 57
. Ideas that would be regarded as just so-so if suggested
by someone else are seen as 58 when proposed by
these persons. And actions that might be considered risky if 59
by others are seen as brave when carried out by these
“chosen” men and women.
As you can see, halo effects carry high
costs. They may lead some persons to have an 60 high
opinion of their own worth, while making things 61
for others who are equally deserving. Further, by giving too
much influence to persons who are not ready to receive 62
, and by preventing hidden talent from being 63 ,
they can harm organizations as well as individuals. Clearly,
64 , it is important to recognize the existence and impact
of halo effects; only then can their harmful effects be 65
.

六、Translation
(1)
Well, what is “impossible” anyway? There is
no difference between things impossible and possible but what
you think of them as. When you are afraid to sweat for your
goal, it’s very easy to find excuses to prove that your end is
never to be reached. When your are reluctant to get all yourself
out, it’s even easier to accept the bad circumstances. But, if
you are willing, and determined to dream the impossible dream,
and to take pains to realize your dream, things can be greatly
different.
(2)
Early in the morning, at noon, or in the
evening, in big cities and in the countryside, you can see
people running. Men and women, children and teenagers,
middle-aged and old people are running. People run
everywhere---- along the beaches, through the parks, down the
streets, or at the gymnasium. Some people even run in their
living rooms.
A few years ago, running was not so popular.
In the 1960s, some people would see a runner and ask, “hey,
what’s the hurry?” Or they might say to themselves, “Is he all
right?” Women almost never ran. If they did, they might hear a
man shout, “If I catch you, can I keep you?” But today all this
is changing.Today men and women of all ages enjoy running.
