第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从短文后所给各题的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Nine years ago, after Leo had died, people said to me, “I never knew he was your stepfather”. You see, I never call him that. At first, he was no one special in my life. Then he became my friend. In time, I felt he was my father too.

Leo married my mother when I was eleven. Two years later we moved into a house in a new suburban development, where he put down roots. At first our lawn was just a mud pile with wild grass, but Leo saw bright possibilities. “We plant trees there to give us shade as well as some flowers”, he said. And just these little touches made our lawn different from all the others here. More important, a real family was forming. Leo was becoming a full-time parent, and I was learning what it meant to have a father.

Weekday morning when the weather was bad, Leo often drove me to school. Having a father drop you off may have been something my classmates took for granted, but I always thought it was wonderful. Saturday mornings, we went to the hardware shop, then stepped into the five-and-ten, buying a sports magazine or something else. Some people might think that doing shopping together is nothing special, but I, who had ever before spent my childhood watching other families do their everyday activities, experienced them now with extreme delight. Looking back, I realize that Leo gave me what I needed most-the experience of doing ordinary things together as a family.

Soon after we moved to the suburbs, one of our new neighbors introduced herself to me. She had already met my mother and Leo. “You know,” she said. “you look just like your father”. I knew she was just making conversation-but even so “Thank you,” I said. Why tell her anything different?

56The writer’s purpose in writing this passage is         .

       Ato tell some unforgettable experiences

Bto show how interesting a person Leo was

Cto remind us of our parent

Dto explain why they moved to the suburbs

57Which of the following can be used in place of “put down roots”?

       Asettled                 Bplanted                Cfarmed                Dworked

58In the writer’s opinion,         .

Ait’s not easy for stepfamilies to live together

Bnot all the stepfathers are as good as Leo

Cthe husband and wife must think more about their children before they divorce

DIn stepfamilies the love and friendship are extremely precious

59When he said “Why tell her anything different?” the writer meant that         .

Ahe should have told the truth

Bhe wouldn’t tell her the truth

Che wanted to tell her something that had nothing to do with Leo

Dhe wanted to keep silence whenever he met the neighbors

It is commonly believed that only rich middle-aged businessmen suffer from stress. In fact anyone become ill as a result of stress if they experience a lot of worry over a long period and their health is not particularly good. Stress can be a friend or an enemy; it can warn you that you are under too much pressure and should change your way of life. It can kill you if you don’t notice the warning signals. Doctors agree that it is probably the biggest single cause of illness in the western world.

When we are frightened and worried, our bodies produce certain chemicals to help us fight what is troubling us. Unfortunately these chemicals produce the energy needed to run away fast from an object of fear, and in modern life that’s often impossible. If we don’t use up these chemicals, or if we produce too many of them, they may actually harm us. The parts of the body that are most affected by stress are the stomach, heart, skin, head and back. Stress can cause car accidents, heart attacks, and alcoholism, and may even drive people to suicide.

Our living and working conditions may put us under stress. Overcrowding in large cities, traffic jams, competition for jobs, uncertainty about the future, and big change in our lives, may be stressful. Some British doctors have pointed out that one of Britain’s worst flu waves came within weeks of the country changing to decimal coinage (system of money divided by tens and hundreds). Also if you have changed jobs or moved houses in recent months you are more likely to fall ill than if you haven’t. And more people commit suicide in times of inflation.

As with all illnesses prevention is better than cure, a very common danger signal is the inability to relax. “When you are taking work home, when you can’t enjoy an evening with friends, when you haven’t time for outdoor exercisethat is the time to stop and ask yourself whether your present life really suits you”, says one family doctor. “Then it’s time to join a relaxation class, or take up dancing, painting or gardening.”

60Stress can be a friend because it can         .

       Abe a warning signal

       Bproduce certain chemicals

Cmake us change our way of life

Dhelp us fight what is troubling us

61Which is the following is true according to the passage?

AStress is the biggest single cause of death.

BOnly middle-aged businessmen suffer from stress.

CEveryone may suffer from stress under unfavourable living and working conditions.

DStress is caused by our running away from an object of fear.

62The warning signals of stress appear when you         .

       Acannot relax

       Bjoin a relaxation class

Cenjoy an evening with your friends

Dfind that your present life suits you

63All of the following can help you to relax EXCEPT         .

Ajoining a dancing class                          Btaking work home

Cdoing outdoor exercises                        Dtaking painting or gardening

After almost 30 years of arguing that a black hole swallows up everything that falls into it, British astrophysicist(天体物理学家)Stephen Hawking moved backward last week.

The world-famous author of “A Brief History of Time” said he and other scientists had got it wrong.

“I’ve been thinking about this problem for the last 30 years, and I think I now have the answer to it,” said Hawking. “A black hole only appears to form but later opens up and releases information about what fell inside. So we can be sure of the past and can predict the future.”

The findings could help solve the “black hole information paradox(似是而非的观点)”, an important puzzle in modern physics.

A black hole is a region in space where matter is under such pressure that not even light can escape from its gravitational pull. But exactly what happens there has long puzzled scientists.

Black holes occur when a massive star burns up its nuclear fuel and gravity forces it to collapse in on itself. The enormous weight of the star’s outer layers moves in towards its core. The force of gravity keeps nearly all light from escaping and nothing inside can be glimpsed from the outside.

The star actually disappears from the universe into a point of infinite density. That is a place where the laws of general relativity that govern space and time break down. Hawking has devoted most of his life to studying these questions.

At the beginning, cosmologists believed the holes were like a “cosmic vacuum cleaner”, sucking up everything in their path.

Hawing revolutionized the study of black holes when he proved, in 1976 that, under the strange rules of quantum physics(量子物理),when black holes form, they send out energy and lose mass in the process.

In thinking up this so-called “Hawking radiation”, the Cambridge mathematician also created one of the biggest puzzles in physics.

These particles, he said, contained no information about what has been occurring inside the black hole, or how it formed. Under his theory, once the black hole disappears, all the information within it is lost.

68What’s the important of Hawking’s new findings?

AThey could help solve the puzzle about black holes.

BThey have solved the mystery of black holes.

CWe can now know what is going on inside black holes.

DScientists have already predicted the future of black holes now.

69What’s the meaning of the underlined word “cosmologist”?

Aa person who studies the universe and its origin and development

Ba person who studies the stars and their development

Ca person who travels in a spacecraft

Da person who studies the position of the stars and the movements of the planets

70Which of the following is true?

AHawking has now studied the black holes for more than 40 years.

BDuring the course of the forming of black holes, the enormous weight of the star’s core moves into the outer layers.

CAlmost nothing can escape from the gravitational pull of the black hole.

DScientists have been thinking the black holes contain no information.

71Which is the best title of the passage?

AThe formation of the Black Hole            BBlack Hole Information Paradox

CBlack Hole Mystery                              DThe Cause of the Black Hole

Sports Ease Moods

Beverley had been feeling dull, bored and a bit of it. He mentioned his mood(state of mind) when going to Andrew for a sports massage. He wondered whether he should take up Tai Chi. But Andrew didn’t think so.

“Tai Chi is great for people who want to feel grounded(根深蒂固的),but that isn’t your problem,” he said. “What you need is something more exciting, like dancing.”

In future, therapist(理疗专家)may well suggest that you fight your sadness with a course in kickboxing, and family doctors might suggest that you take a rest in the mountains instead.

We’ve long been aware that exercise has benefits beyond the physical ones; that activity can relax you, and help psychological well-being by reducing stress, anxiety and sadness.

Now some trainers and sports psychologists are going further and examining how to identify the correct exercise for a client’s specific state of mind and personality.

Professor Stuart Biddle, an exercise and sports psychologist based at Loughborough University, England, had researched the effects of exercise on moods.

One of his findings was that, if your problem is low self-esteem, weight training should be your bag. “Working with weights builds strength,” he says, “and creates a stronger body image.”

Anger management, meanwhile, demands bursts of explosive activity, from sports such as boxing or tennis.

This is because anger makes the body release adrenaline(肾上腺素), which causes heart rate and blood pressure to rise and muscles to become tighter—the physiological changes required if you are to defend yourself.

Research shows that the “punch-bag” method of releasing disappointment and anger through hitting a boxing opponent or tennis ball, can help with fighting issues.

They have also found that teamwork is good for self-esteem and that those who are brought together to work in a social setting become more lively.

Which type of exercise will best help is, of course, down to the individual. Clearly, before you can find the best physical activity for yourself, you have to know your needs.

Ask yourself a few questions such as: What do I need in my life? Which issues are difficult for me? Am I sad or troubled? Only then can you decide whether you need taking up, or taking down.

72Why did Andrew think Beverley shouldn’t take up Tai Chi?

       Abecause Beverley was too weak.

       Bbecause Beverley was too foolish.

Cbecause Beverley’s mind was out of control.

       Dbecause Beverley lacked activity.

73Which of the following is true according to the passage?

APsychologists haven’t realized the relationship between exercise and health.

BPeople have already realized the relationship between exercise and spirits.

CBoxing and tennis are the best ways to increase one’s self-esteem.

DTrainers and psychologists don’t agree with each other on exercise.

74Professor Stuart Biddle thinks that          .
