Sleep Struggle

————————————————————————————————————————DR. MARJORIE SEIDENFELD ANSWERS YOUR HEALTH QUESTIONS

——————————————————————————————————————— I have such a terrible time falling asleep every night that I’m always tired and it’s affecting 影响my schoolwork. What should I do?
                                                           —Mindy in Nevada

——————————————————————————————————————One in every five young people has a sleep problem, so you’re not alone. Getting enough sleep has become as important as eating vegetables and exercising regularly. It’s very important for your body.

Most young people only get seven hours of sleep each night, when they actually need nine hours. And making up for lost sleep during the week by sleeping in on weekends doesn’t really work. In fact, sleeping late on weekends may actually do you more harm than good, if you have sleep problems.

What happens if you don’t get enough sleep? If your sleep problem continues for a few nights, you could suffer serious problems. Lack of sleep can affect learning and memory. Worse, if your sleep difficulties last a long time, that could lead to anxiety or depression (抑郁) .

Therefore, you’ve got to have some healthy sleep habits. Below are some suggestions:

GO TO BED AT THE SAME TIME—including weekends, if possible.

WAKE UP AROUND THE SAME TIME EVERY MORNING When you sleep late just one morning during the week, it may disturb your body clock. This will make it hard for you to sleep that night.

DO SOMETHING RELAXING before going to bed.

EXERCISE DURING THE DAY. Don’t exercise right before going to bed.

AVOID DRINKING ALCOHOL. Alcohol makes you excited. This prevents you from falling asleep or wakes you up during the night.

DON’T SMOKE. Smoking is always bad for the body. Smoking before bedtime keeps you awake.

If trying these tips over a couple of weeks does not help you, speak to your doctor. Do not take any sleeping pills without first asking your doctor. Many have strong side effects.

60. According to the passage, if you have sleep problems for a few nights, you could be ________.

A. lonely            B. serious          C. forgetful            D. depressed

61. The passage suggests that people with sleep problems should ________.

A. eat vegetables and exercise regularly

B. make up for lost sleep on weekends

C. follow a fixed timetable for sleep

D. sleep seven hours every day

62. We can learn from the suggestions that ________.

A. getting up earlier one morning makes it easier to fall asleep that night

B. listening to soft music before going to bed may help you fall asleep

C. smokers and those who drink alcohol usually have sleep problems

D. exercising in the evening will help you get to sleep

63. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Sleep problems are serious among young people.

B. Sleeping late on weekends can make up for lost sleep.

C. Your eating habits will be broken due to lack of sleep.

D. You’ll no longer have your sleep problem if you try the tips.

Mountain lions live in mountainous areas of the western United States. Lately, however, people have reported seeing them in quiet neighborhoods all across the country! Usually considered shy and seldom seen, these lions are becoming more noticeable.
被看见 In addition, the lions appear to be moving east. They were even reported in the suburbs (郊区) of Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

It seems certain that these “kings of the mountains” are moving. Why? Scientists are not sure. Some think that as the mountain lion population increases in the west, younger wild cats are leaving the area. These cats are searching for new homes and new places for food.

The young males are looking for new homes,” says Lynn Sadler, who is the director of the Mountain Lion Foundation in Sacramento, Calif. “People tend to create too many barriers (障碍), such as buildings, fences, roads, and noise. As the mountain lions seek new places and food and water sources (水源) , these barriers get in their way.”

The sightings have made people increasingly watchful. Sometimes the “mountain lions” that people report seeing turn out to be large dogs or even house cats. But at least a few of the meetings have been real. The building of new roads, the growing of suburbs and the growing popularity of outdoor activities are all increasing the chances that people in various parts of the country may meet up with a mountain lion.

Because many people are concerned about (担心)the reappearance of the American lion, an expert outlined(概述) some ways they can avoid attracting the wild cats: Never leave pets or pet food outside; properly care for farm animals; and plan public land use to enable the lions to move safely from one place to another.

To be fair,” says the expert, “mountain lions are trying to regain their homes. They were here first. Now we need to find ways we can live together.”

64. Mountain lions are moving probably because ________ .

A. the suburbs of big cities are peaceful and quiet

B. more roads are being built into the mountains

C. the number of the lions increases in the west

D. young lions are seeking new partners

65. According to the passage, it is clear that ________.

A. the reported sightings of mountain lions have not been proved

B. people walking in the country may come across a lion

C. fences have been built to protect the lions

D. mountain lions prefer populated areas

66. To avoid attracting mountain lions, people are advised ________.

A. to build more roads for the lions to move safely

B. to keep a close watch on their farm animals

C. not to stay outdoors   D. not to raise pets

67. Which is the best title for the passage?

A. Mountain Lions in Unlikely Places

B. Measures Taken to Avoid Lions

C. Number of Sightings Going Up

D. Mountain Lions Moving West

Letter to Editor of TV Weekly

Dear Sir/Madam,

I read Alison Burnham’s review 评论of When we were 12, and I do not agree with her. I thought the programme was wonderful — I found the old news pictures really interesting — they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling.

The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s). My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket. I held out my hand with the money in it — one big coin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey. I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything. When school finished for the day, I couldn’t catch the bus home — I had to walk. As a grown-up, whenever I’ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I’m able to take control of the situation.

I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme. Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so called “reality programmes”. I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry.

Yours faithfully,
Chris Daniels

68. What is Chris Daniels’ purpose of writing this letter?

A. To persuade Bret Chrysler to turn away from quiz shows.

B. To entertain other readers with old news pictures.

C. To express his appreciation of the programme.

D. To have his story told on the programme.

69. Chris Daniels tells the story about the bus ticket to ________.

A. describe how painful his early experience was

B. draw a direct response from Alison Burnham

C. show how the programme made him think

D. teach the readers of TV Weekly a lesson

70. According to the passage, Chris Daniels had to walk home because ________.

A. he hadn’t got a return ticket

B. he had lost his bus ticket

C. he didn’t like big crowds

D. he missed the bus home

71. What does Chris Daniels now thi
