四,阅读理解
Here is a story that
told about an American general (将军),
who was a very important
person in the American
army during the First World War. Everybody in the United States
know him and many
people wished to have a picture or something of his in their
homes.
Of course, that was
not easy.
Soon after the
war, the general returned to Washington. One day he went to see
a
dentist(牙科医生)
and had six teeth pulled out. A week later the general heard
that
his teeth were being
sold in curiosity(古玩)
shops at $ 5 each. On each of the teeth
there was a label(标签)
with the name of the general and the words:
“Buy these teeth
and show them to your friends at home.”
The general got
angry. He rushed to his office and ordered six officers to go
around
the city and buy all
his teeth.
The officers went
out and visited every curiosity shop in the capital. They were
away from the office
all day. In the evening they returned and put on the table in
front
of the general the
teeth they had bought. They had collected 175 teeth!
56. Many people wished
to have a picture or something of the man in their homes.

A. he was an
American general B. he was a very important person
C. his things
were expensive D. he was a famous inventor
57. Why do you think
the officers got so many more teeth?
A.
Because
they wanted to make the general happy.
B. Because they liked
the teeth.
C. Because the
curiosity shop owners made use of the general's name in order
to make more money.
D. Because all of
those teeth were really the general's.
58. The best title for

You are reading a
book. You suddenly close your eyes. Can you see the book? "Of
course not," you will say. But can you tell why? You would
probably say, "When I close my eyes, my eyesight (视力)
can not get out of my eyes to get to the book. ' Many others
may give an explanation (解释) very much
like the above. But this explanation is wrong. You cannot see
any objects unless light from the object gets into your eyes.
Some of the things you see give off light of their own.
The sun, the stars, a
lighted lamp are examples that can be seen by their own light.
Such things are luminous (发光的).
Most of things you see are not giving light of their own. They
are simply reflecting (反射) light that
falls on them from the sun or some
other luminous body.
The moon, for example, does not give any light of its own.
It' s non-luminous.
You see it because sunlight falls on it and some of it reflects
in your direction. So moonlight is only second-hand sunlight.
Light travels so fast
that the time in which it travels from the book you are reading
to your eyes is so
short as if there were no time at all.
59. We can see the
book because ______.
A. our
eyesight can get out of our eyes to get to the book
B. the book
we see can give off light of its own
C. the light
falling on the book is reflected into our eyes
D. we do not
close our eyes
60. Moonlight is
______.
A. the light
which falls on the moon from the sun or some other luminous body
B. the light
that comes from the sun and is reflected by the moon
C. sunlight
D. only
second-hand light
61. The passage mainly
tells us _____.
A. you will
not see anything if you close your eyes
B. the sun,
the stars and a lighted lamp can be seen by their own light
C. light
travels very fast
D. how people
see things
A Narrow Escape
Shortly after the
war, my brother and ! were invited to spend a few days' holiday
with an uncle who had
just returned from abroad. He had rented (租)
a cottage in the
country, although he
hardly spent much time there. We understood the reason for this
after we arrived: the
cottage had no comfortable furniture (家具)
in it. Many of the
windows were broken
and the roof leaked (漏水),
making the whole house wet.
On our first
evening, we sat around the fire after supper listening to the
stories
our uncle told of his
many adventures in other countries. ! was so tired after the
long
train journey that I
would have preferred to go to bed; but I could not bear (忍受)
to miss any of my
uncle' s exciting stories. He was just in the middle of
describing
a rather terrible
experience he had once had when suddenly there was a loud crash
from
the bedroom above, the
one where my brother and I were going to sleep.
When we got to
the top of the stairs and opened the bedroom door, a strange
sight
met our eyes. A large
part of the ceiling (天花板)
had fallen right to the pillow (枕头) of
my bed.
